Description
Jensen Yarn from Isager was originally named ÅLJ, after the knitwear designer Åse Lund Jensen. During the 1960s, she sold hand-knitted sweaters in a heavy Swedish yarn, but the high weight made shipping costs outside of Denmark far too expensive. This led to a collaboration with the Danish mill Henrichsens Uldspinderi in Skive to develop a lighter, 3-ply yarn. This is how ÅLJ was born, along with a color palette of natural shades that still forms the basis for Isager's Jensen Yarn, Spinni, and Tvinni today.
The white wool comes from New Zealand, while the brown and gray wool (used for the s-colors) comes from Gotland sheep in Europe. The supplier in New Zealand is a partner in the Wool Integrity program, which ensures that principles regarding animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and traceability are followed.
Jensen Yarn is chemically dyed, but based on the natural plant dyes originally chosen by Åse Lund Jensen. Colors 0, 0s, 2s, and 3s are completely undyed and unbleached. Other colors are Oeko-Tex 100 dyes from Europe, though because the mill in Skive is not certified, the product cannot carry the official labeling.
Because the yarn is 3-ply, it is firmly and evenly spun, making it excellent for textured knitting as the pattern stands out clearly. It is a very durable yarn that grows more beautiful over time. We particularly recommend it for cardigans and sweaters for both indoor and outdoor use.
